Hydropower
Hydropower
The largest percentage of renewable energy comes from hydropower which represents 15% of all electricity generation. Hydropower facilities generate electricity by forcing water through turbines which in turn generate electrical power. Hydropower can be classified into four types:
- Large-scale hydroelectric dams such as the Hoover Dam in Arizona and the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington. This is the oldest and likely most commonly known type of renewable energy.
- Micro hydro systems which produce 100 KW (KiloWatts) or less of power.
- Damless hydro systems which use river water to generate electricity without use of a dam.
- Ocean renewable energy which utilizes tidal power to generate electricity.
Although Hydropower is more prevalent in other regions of the United States, Verde Energy uses Hydropower as part of its renewable energy offer to home and business customers in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
