Watt Thoughts: The Verde Energy USA Blog

Whether you watch the evening news, read newspapers or get your updates from the Internet you’ve certainly heard a lot of talk recently about renewable resources and sustainable energy.  In short, our traditional reliance on fossil fuel supplies like oil and coal cannot be sustained indefinitely. Fossil fuels present several challenges.

Limited Supply – Though no one knows exactly how much oil or coal is left, we know one thing for sure, it is limited and every day we use more. With limited supply and increasing demand our current energy policies cannot be sustained forever.

Price Spikes – Oil in particular is prone to price spikes. As the world’s supply declines and emerging economies like China and India consume more of what’s left, we can count on continued price sensitivity.

Political Sensitivity – Many of the world’s largest fossil fuel exporters are on tenuous terms with the United States. Political issues have historically played a role in the availability and price of oil and other fossil fuels.

Environmental Toll – Mining, refining and burning fossil fuels adversely effects the environment. As emerging economies industrialize this pollution will continue to increase.

From the federal government on down to your local community, more attention than ever is being paid to energy use and our future. Many people are looking to renewable energy sources as the key to our future.

Traditionally renewable energy has meant generating energy from alternative, non-fossil sources. These include biofuel (derived from recently lifeless or living biological material), geothermal (using heat from the Earth’s molten core), hydropower (harnessing waterpower through tidal shift, waves, etc.), wind power and solar power.

Scientists and engineers work every day to create new ways of cost-effectively harnessing the potential power available through renewable resources. Today that often means providing electricity and other energy sources through a blended mixture of fossil and renewable resources. Over time, the plan is to move away from reliance on fossil fuels and toward greater reliance on cleaner, more plentiful renewable energy sources.
